Jean François de Galaup, comte de La Pérouse became the first European to set foot on the island of Maui on May 30, 1786.  La Perouse Bay on Maui is named after him.

Father Damien, who has been canonized as a Saint, belonged to France’s Congregation of the Sacred Hearts in Paris and was sent to Hawaii from France.

Honolulu is the sister city to Bruyeres because in 1944 the 442^nd Regimental Combat Team and the 100^th Battalion freed Bruyeres and Biffontaine.
