David Brown

Scholarship Chair


David Brown has been interested in the French language since studying in middle and high school, first at St. John’s School, Waterloo, Belgium and then at the American School of Paris, where he graduated in 1978.  He graduated with honors with a BA in Government from Cornell University in 1981 and received two MBAs, first from the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium in international business and econometrics in 1983, and then from the University of Chicago in finance in 1984.  After working at CBS News’ Latin American Office in Miami, he joined the U.S. Department of State as an Economic Officer in 1986, retiring in 2023 as a member of the Senior Foreign Service.  While at the State Department, he served in five countries in francophone Africa, four times at Deputy Chief of Mission and once as a ChargĂ© d’Affaires and Chief of Mission.  He also served in Russia, China, Japan, Germany and Taiwan as an economic officer, political advisor, and language student.  

Post retirement, he enjoys listening to Radio France International in French and other languages.  His wife of 33 years is from Taiwan.  They have two adult sons.
