    • A Parisian Salon by Pauline Viardot featuring

Laetitia Grimaldi (soprano) & Ammiel Bushakevitz (piano)

University of Hawaii, Orvis Hall, October 29th at 3pm

The French salons of La Belle Epoque played an integral role in the cultural and intellectual development of France. The salons were seen by artists as a cultural hub, for the upper middle class and aristocracy,  responsible for the dissemination of good manners and sociability. Today, a salon is a store one goes to for an expensive haircut. However, in 19th-century France, salons were organized gatherings hosted in private homes, usually by prominent women. Individuals who attended often discussed literature or shared their views and opinions on topics from science to politics. The salons consequently became an important source of political ideas and revolutionary sentiment. Guests at salons usually came from the haute bourgeoisie (nobility). Most were educated, well read and informed about politics, current affairs and intellectual debates.

Alliance Française Hawaii welcomes French soprano Laetitia Grimaldi and her pianist Ammiel Bushakevitz for a program inspired by the French salon of La Belle Epoque in a concert featuring works by French female composers who have long lived in the shadows of their male counterparts.  A Parisian Salon by Pauline Viardot (a composer famous for her salons), will not only include the duo’s lecture-recital on female composers, but will also include music by some of France's most famous male composers too!

Save the Date!  Tickets Go on Sale September 2023!

    • A YouTube recording of Grimaldi and Bushakevitz in a performance of Pauline Viardot’s "Ombres de minuit" can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/SUN1uvRcpHg
